Phil Pike at SHADWelcome to the first ADIPS Newsletter aimed at Controllers (the industry name for us operators and owners of fairgrounds and theme park rides).

My name is Phil Pike, I am Chair of the Amusement Devices Safety Council (ADSC), plus I am also a director of ADIPS Limited. The ADSC is a collaboration of trade associations, such as the Showman’s Guild of Great Britain, that come together to help administer and guide the Amusement Devices Inspection Procedures Scheme (ADIPS).

This newsletter shows a modernisation of how our industry is moving forward and has changed over the years. And ADIPS, and the ADSC, is adapting to complement this.

Years ago, the focus was all about the DOC (Declaration of Operational Compliance), the test certificate. Now we find that the required documents we need to have in our portfolio is larger. And ADIPS, with the ADSC, is helping controllers to adapt to this.

Over recent years, I am proud to say that ADIPS, through the drive of our general manager, Carl, and the association’s representatives, is now venturing from just being a place to get a ride tested. It is spreading its wings to help us (yes, I am a controller as well) to help you with staff training, the compiling of a ‘Controller’s Pack’ of important documents, and the sharing of safety information. Yes, this newsletter is an important part of that.

It has always been an endeavour to get information out to the end of the chain, the controllers. Years ago, this was only via annual association meetings, occasional printed newsletters or an article in World’s Fair.

Recently, ADIPS has started to construct a database of controller’s emails so that it can get the information out there quickly if needed. This newsletter is a step forward in the process.

These ADIPS newsletters are free. So, please tell all your friends in the industry to sign up on the ADIPS website now.

Even your workers and attendants can sign up – they will just need to leave the equipment section of the process blank. Also, controllers that do not have ADIPS applicable equipment can sign up, such as catering, sideshows and performers. There will be something of interest for everyone, including electrical or industry news that will be of value to them.

Plus, you get to hear about any Safety Health Awareness Days (SHADS) that are being held, like the up-and-coming one in Glasgow. These ADIPS SHADs are free to everyone. A bit of free training for you and your staff.

We would be interested in your feedback, ideas and suggestions. All of course to keep everybody informed, and to further safety for ride attraction owners, operators, staff and the general public.

Yours sincerely,

Phil Pike

Chair, ADSC
